Women's Issues

A play By Katie Clarke & Marlee Sansom

With contributions from James Ersil, David Woroner, Adriana Loewen, and Georgia Noble-Irwin

Women’s Issues is a dark comedy about four different folks in group therapy with an overconfident, under-qualified therapist-in-training. Their conflicting narratives about socio-political topics begin to intersect as they each deal with unique traumas in an increasingly polarized political climate. These four stories examine the nature of individuality and the ways we create connections with people who seem radically different than ourselves. Sometimes, the voices we need to hear most are those we don’t agree with.

The characters in this show are fictional, but many of the experiences and stories disclosed are true. The characters are based on people I know, my own experiences, friends’ and family members’ experiences, and those of women interviewed by the Huffington Post, CBC News, The New Yorker, and The New York Times. Some of the lines and expressions are also based on the works of Virginia Woolf, Henrik Ibsen, Simone de Beauvoir, and on articles by New York Times journalist Masha Gessen.

Women's Issues was first performed at the University of King's College in February 2019. It was then restaged, with the same cast and crew, at the 2019 Halifax Fringe Festival.
